You want it straight, you just do not want to look like you are fixing it

Nearly every adult who asks about aligners has the same two thoughts at the same time. The first is that the crowding, or the one tooth that turned, or the bite that shifted after the wisdom teeth came in, has bothered them for years. The second is that they are forty-one years old, they run meetings, they take photographs at their children’s events, and metal brackets are not on the table.

There is often a third, quieter reason. Crowded teeth are harder to clean, and the areas that a brush never reaches properly are where gum problems and decay tend to begin. Plenty of patients arrive for cosmetic reasons and stay for that one.

What Invisalign® can and cannot do

Invisalign uses a sequence of clear, removable trays that move the teeth gradually into a planned position. They come out for meals and for brushing, which is the practical difference most patients care about. A 3D scan at the start produces a projection of the movement and of the expected final position, so you see where the treatment is going before you commit to it.

There are limits worth stating. Aligners handle crowding, spacing, rotations and many bite corrections well. Severe skeletal discrepancies, some complex bite problems and certain impacted teeth are outside what trays alone can resolve, and those cases need fixed appliances, a specialist or a combined plan. You will be told which category yours falls into after the scan.

The treatment also depends on you in a way that braces do not. Aligners work while they are in your mouth. Patients who take them out for long stretches do not get the projected result, and no amount of planning compensates for that.

How it works

  1. 01

    Scan and projection

A 3D scan of both arches, and a digital projection of how the teeth are planned to move. You see the starting point and the planned end point side by side.

  2. 02

    Your aligners

The trays are produced and fitted. Small tooth-colored attachments are bonded to some teeth when the planned movement requires them.

  3. 03

    Wearing them

Each set is worn as instructed, removed for eating and for brushing, and replaced by the next in the sequence.

  4. 04

    Check-ins

Appointments are short and spaced out, because most of the treatment happens outside the office.

  5. 05

    Retention

Once the teeth are in position, retainers hold them there. Teeth move throughout life, and retention is not optional if you want to keep the result.

Straightening first, then the aesthetics

For patients who arrive asking about veneers, the scan sometimes shows that moving the teeth into position would solve most of what bothers them, with far less porcelain afterwards and in some cases none at all.

Because the same dentist plans both, that conversation happens once, with the whole picture on the table, instead of being split between an orthodontist and a cosmetic dentist who never speak to each other.

Frequently asked

How long does Invisalign take?

It depends on how far the teeth have to move and on how consistently the aligners are worn. Your scan produces an estimated sequence, and that estimate is discussed with you before you start rather than adjusted along the way.

Will people notice?

The trays are clear and thin. Attachments, when your case needs them, are tooth-colored. Most patients report that colleagues do not notice unless told.

Does it hurt?

Each new set brings a feeling of pressure for a day or two, which is the movement happening. Most patients describe it as noticeable rather than painful.

Will it affect my speech?

Some patients notice a slight difference in the first days, which typically settles as the tongue adapts.

Can I have Invisalign if I have crowns or veneers?

Often yes, though existing restorations affect where attachments can be placed and how the teeth move. This is assessed at the scan.

What about after treatment?

Retainers. Teeth drift back toward their original position without them, and that is true for every orthodontic treatment, not only aligners.

What does Invisalign cost at Lumina?

It depends on the complexity of the case and the number of aligners required. You receive an exact price after the scan, before treatment begins, and monthly payment plans are available.

Ready to see where your teeth could go?

A scan and a projection of the result, before you decide anything.
